Every disparaging look that lighted upon us and every small failure that befell us has helped to assemble an impenetrable suit of shame armour that we wear to protect ourselves.

In addition to causing personal problems, this caused professional problems for me as well. I kept my suit of armor on all the time at work, to protect against future mistakes. It made others describe me as prickly and not a team player, which really hurt my career.
